Yongin, a leading city in the semiconductor industry

In Yongin City, Samsung Electronics is set to invest around 360 trillion won in the “Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex” in Cheoin-gu’s I-dong and Namsa-eup, while SK Hynix will invest approximately 600 trillion won in the “Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex” in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu. The combined investment is expected to reach nearly 1,000 trillion won.

Yongin City, which has coined the term “Cheonjo Gaebyeok,” is poised to become the world’s largest semiconductor ecosystem as a single city once its massive semiconductor projects currently underway are completed.

The Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex, chosen as a candidate site for the national industrial complex in March 2023, received government approval for its national industrial complex plan in December 2024. Compensation procedures for the Yongin National Industrial Complex kicked off in December last year. The project aims to establish six production lines (Fabs) here, with the goal of commissioning some of the first production lines by 2030.

A project to develop the Yongin General Industrial Complex is currently underway in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu. The production line is expected to be set up in four phases, with the goal of commissioning part of the first production line by 2027.

Yongin City is actively courting semiconductor material, parts, equipment, and design companies, with a focus on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The Korean subsidiaries of top global semiconductor equipment companies like ASML, Lam Research, and Tokyo Electron, along with 93 domestic and international semiconductor equipment suppliers, have either already set up shop or are planning to do so.

Mayor Lee Sang-il stated that Yongin Special City will strive to continuously develop its infrastructure, including housing, transportation, education, culture, and sports, to attract and support companies and talent in the semiconductor high-tech industry, ultimately contributing to the growth of Korea and the city.
