Yongin Special City, the hub city of the semiconductor industry in Korea (Mayor Lee Sang-il), has been selected as the winner in the semiconductor industry-leading city category in the 15th Korea National Brand Awards. Yongin scored the highest in brand awareness among local authorities in Korea in the semiconductor industry-leading city category in the National Brand Competitiveness Index. This is attributed to the fruition of the efforts made by Mayor Lee Sang-il since his inauguration, focusing on the establishment of the semiconductor industry ecosystem. Mayor Lee achieved positive results in △ attraction of national industrial complexes, △ formation of hinterland cities and △ attraction of corporate investment, which are the basis for the ‘establishment of the semiconductor industry ecosystem.’
In March last year, Yongin successfully attracted the ‘Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex’ in Idong-eup, and Namsa-eup, Cheoin-gu. Samsung Electronics plans to invest approximately 360 trillion won over the next 20 years in this area. In addition, in November last year, Yongin succeeded in forming the ‘Public Housing Area Semiconductor National Industrial Complex’ in Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu. Furthermore, the establishment of the ‘Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex’ in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, is in progress where SK Hynix plans to invest 122 trillion won.
Yongin is making efforts to conduct the preliminary feasibility survey in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy for the ‘Advanced Semiconductor Mass Production Linked Mini-Fab Infrastructure Construction Project.’ A mini-fab is a state-of-the-art facility for demonstrating semiconductor materials, components, and equipment. Additionally, Samsung Electronics Giheung Campus, where Samsung Electronics planned to invest 20 trillion won, is expected to become a hub for next-generation semiconductor research. To this end, Yongin opened the ‘Semiconductor Education and Industry Hub’ in collaboration with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) on March 13th to cultivate semiconductor industry experts.
Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, “Yongin is where the Korean semiconductor industry began 40 years ago,” adding, “In the future, it will stand as a city leading the global semiconductor industry.” He further remarked, “Yongin is striving to build the world’s best infrastructure in various areas such as roads, transportation, education, and culture, to enable advanced industry-related companies and talents to contribute to the development of Korea.”
