Uljin Snow Crab

Uljin Snow Crab, renowned for its exceptional quality and distinctive taste, is a favorite among consumers. These crabs are harvested from the Wangdolcho waters off the coast of Uljin, where the cold and warm ocean currents meet. Thriving in a nutrient-rich marine environment, Uljin Snow Crabs are known for their unparalleled sweetness and deep, rich flavor that set them apart from snow crabs from other regions.

The waters around Wangdolcho, at depths of 200 to 400 meters, are exceptionally clean and well-preserved, often referred to as the “Underwater Geumgangsan” for their breathtaking beauty and ecological richness. Uljin Snow Crab was positioned as the ‘premium product’ thanks to the tireless efforts of around 70 local fishing vessels engaged in snow crab gillnetting. Uljin-gun has implemented a variety of support policies to encourage self-regulation among fishers in order to protect crab populations.

In particular, under the TAC (Total Allowable Catch) system for coastal fisheries, each vessel is limited to selling 600 crabs per day. Additionally, snow crab fishing is completely prohibited from June to October each year to allow the crab population to recover.

To minimize the environmental impact and protect marine ecosystems, biodegradable fishing gear is used during operations, and discarded fishing nets are collected once the season ends.

Uljin-gun is also working to overhaul the entire fisheries sector, including improvements to the distribution system. Uljin-gun Governor Son Byeong-bok stated, “We will continue to support our fishers so that Uljin Snow Crab can maintain its reputation as a premium delicacy.”
