Toongso Whistles

A blockbuster play based on the original work ‘Choecheokjeon’ by the scholar Jo Wi-han in Joseon period. Praised for sparking an explosive reaction in Korean theater and opening up new possibilities for the art form, this epic narrative spanning 30 years has garnered critical acclaim. Set against the backdrop of the Imjin War(Japanese invasion in 1592), the Jeongyu War(Japanese invasion in 1597), and the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties, the play explores themes of love and separation, longing and reunion through the distinctive directorial style of Koh Sun-Woong. Accompanied by live traditional Korean music, the play seamlessly transitions across time and space, from Joseon to China, Japan, and Vietnam, delivering constant laughter and emotional resonance. Featuring the commanding presence of veteran actor Lee Ho-jae and a dynamic ensemble of 20 talented actors, it tells a family drama of hope and faith triumphing amid the chaos of war.
