Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation

The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (“the Corporation”) is a public institution responsible for the nation’s food supply. In 2021, it laid the foundation for ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) practices through the declaration of ‘ESG Management.’ In response to the climate crisis, it introduced the ‘Low Carbon Diet Campaign,’ a citizen-participation campaign, and spread it as an international campaign through the declaration ceremony of ‘Global Green Food Day’ in September 2022.

The Low Carbon Diet Campaign aims to minimize food waste generated during processing by composing diets with △low-carbon and eco-friendly certified agricultural and fishery products, △seafood, such as seaweed and fish with high carbon absorption rates and △ingredients with low carbon emissions during the distribution process. It is a daily practice campaign that reduces greenhouse gas emissions generated in the entire process of food production, distribution, processing, and consumption.
Up to now, it has signed agreements with 640 institutions from 38 countries, including 34 local administrative and educational metropolitan authorities, endeavoring to practice carbon neutrality in the food sector leading the globalization of a low carbon diet. In December of last year, it was recognized as an outstanding institution leading ESG management globally by receiving an appreciation plaque from Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington D.C., USA.

In addition, the Corporation strives for ESG management practices by providing △morning meal support for local universities △support for vulnerable groups with agricultural produce packages and △the enhancement of ethical management systems for transparent institutional operation.

President Kim Chun-jin stated, “By winning an award from the prestigious New York Festivals, I believe the Corporation’s value has been widely acknowledged,” and further emphasized, “We will continue to spread the culture of ESG management practices in the public sector.”
