Haenam-gun, the representative producing district, produces autumn and winter cabbages on the area of about 4,782 ha every year. In particular, Haenam Korean Cabbage accounts for about 80% of the national yield of winter Korean cabbage. Haenam-gun started farming Korean cabbage, in the 1990s because the outdoor ground of Haenam-gun does not freeze, even in winter, which is perfect for growing Korean cabbage in the snowy winter. Quality ‘Korean cabbage from Haenam’ makes the producing district itself the brand.

Haenam Korean cabbage is hard and fully packed through the long growing period of 79 to 90 days as compared to Korean cabbage in the central region, having shorter cropping period (60 days). Haenam Korean cabbage is not easily softened after making Kimchi and is proud of its crispy texture and sweet taste. Moreover, Haenam Korean cabbage contains rich nutrients, including minerals, and compact texture because it grows on the red clay land with sea breeze. As Kimchi making for winter has reduced, salted Korean cabbage has been popular. Moreover, as Kimchi is highly evaluated in terms of the nutritional aspect of enhancing immunity, Kimchi is emerging as a global food and the representative K-food. With such a trend, the domestic market, including production, processing, sales, and export of Haenam Korean cabbage will be expanded more than ever.

Haenam-gun intensively promotes the future agricultural food industry enhancing the values of clean agricultural products. To this end, Haenam-gun has been systematically implementing ▲ the formation of Kimchi ingredients supply complex, ▲ convergence business of Kimchi industry, and ▲ eco-friendly fruit and vegetable complex. An official of Haenam-gun said, “Haenam-gun is the best agricultural province in Korea with the largest certified area for farming. Haenam-gun will preemptively implement a future agricultural basis by forming an agricultural cluster which can cope with climate changes and improving the quality of various agricultural products as well as Haenam Korean cabbage.”
